Software start-up from Dresden revolutionises the process industry and receives 7-digit seed financing

Controllers within modular production lines cannot currently communicate with each other across manufacturer boundaries, which results in extended time-to-market and high costs in the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. Semodia solves this problem by providing a standardised and control-independent description of the automation technology. A range of software products enables Semodia to make a significant contribution to increasing the efficiency of modular process equipment, thus helping to save resources in the process industry.

As a spin-off from TU Dresden and Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg, this start-up aims to guide the modular process industry on its path to Industry 4.0. The founding team consists of engineers Henry Bloch, Stephan Hensel, Anna Menschner and Jan Funke as well as Professors Leon Urbas and Alexander Fay, recognised experts in the field of automation and process control technology.

“We are seeking to use the fresh capital provided by TGFS Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen to expand our team and establish this technology in the market. We already have strong partners on-board who trust our solution,” said Anna Menschner from Semodia.

“Semodia is continuously advancing the trend of modularisation in the process industry initiated by Germany, and is benefiting from the growing market for automation in modular process equipment. The founding team has in-depth know-how in the specific and complex market environment of standardisation in the process industry and was able to acquire its first significant customers at an early stage. All in all, this convinced us to participate in Semodia,” said Dr Matthias Kalbus, investment manager at TGFS.

About Semodia GmbH
Semodia GmbH, which was founded in May 2019, provides solutions based on its Module Type Package (MTP) which enable the modularisation of production lines and laboratories. These can be set up according to the Lego principle thanks to the controller-independent MTP interface. The plug-and-produce approach increases flexibility while reducing investment costs in all areas of the process industry from laboratory to production. Customers include operators of process equipment (chemicals, speciality chemicals, pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, food and beverage), manufacturers of process modules (including temperature controllers and dispensing devices) and manufacturers of automation technology or other engineering tools. Semodia’s focus is on the process industry. The MTP approach can also be applied to other areas like production-related logistics, manufacturing technology, ship automation, oil/gas extraction and processing. www.semodia.com
